internationaal Repertoire Project

International Theatre Repertoire Project

The International Theatre Repertoire Project brings underrepresented theatre texts, or texts that are not available in the Dutch-language region, to the Flemish and Dutch theatre fields through translation and publication. The project includes both classical texts and contemporary work by playwrights. Alongside translation and publication, the project develops programmes around the texts and their contexts.

Broadening the range and perspective

Much international theatre repertoire is not available in Dutch and therefore has difficulty finding its way into the Flemish and Dutch theatre fields. This means that not only texts and authors remain underrepresented, but also other perspectives, histories and ways of looking at the world. The project aims to create space for theatre that is still insufficiently heard and read within the Dutch-language field.

The project began by making Arabic-language theatre more accessible and aims to expand in the coming years to other contexts and playwrights from different countries whose work is underrepresented or not yet sufficiently available in the Dutch-language region.

Introducing and contextualising

Alongside publishing new translations, the project aims to share knowledge and context around this repertoire. Through book presentations, staged readings, conversations and other programmes, the texts are introduced to theatre-makers, companies, educational institutions and audiences.

In this way, the project aims not only to make new texts available, but also to encourage their use and further development within the theatre field.

Project management

The International Theatre Repertoire Project is an initiative of Cees Vossen – Mint Arts Platform – in collaboration with publisher Bebuquin. The selection of texts for publication takes place in dialogue with translators and a network of writers, theatre-makers, academics and institutions in different countries.
